HHS Corner: 100 Days in and the Hits Keep on Coming!!

It’s been a full hundred days of Robert F. Kennedy in the driver's seat, and the pedal has been to the metal the entire time! What are just some of the accomplishments so far?

Let’s go through them, shall we?

First, the Presidential MAHA Commission was formed with a focus on ending the chronic disease epidemic, and it has been rolling forward ever since. They met with MAHA Moms in March, and the commission will submit an initial assessment and strategy addressing the root cause of the childhood chronic disease epidemic. Stay tuned for that report and a detailed breakdown of it.

Next, it was petroleum-based food dyes - those dyes that every other country bans, but are used incessantly in the United States? MAHA was there to cover this historic event!

How will the FDA go about making food healthy again? For starters they will:

  • Establish a national standard and timeline for the food industry to phase out petroleum-based food dyes to natural alternatives.
  • Remove authorization for two synthetic food colorings—Citrus Red No. 2 and Orange B—within the coming months.
  • Eliminate the six remaining synthetic dyes from the food supply by the end of next year by working with industry:  FD&C Green No. 3, FD&C Red No. 40, FD&C Yellow No. 5, FD&C Yellow No. 6, FD&C Blue No. 1, and FD&C Blue No. 2.
  • Request that companies remove FD&C Red No. 3 sooner than the 2027-2028 deadline.
  • Authorize four new natural color additives in the coming weeks. Fast-track the review and approval of others.
  • Partner with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to research how food additives impact children’s health and development.

We also got the troubling news out of the CDC about the prevalence of autism - something that had long been hidden from the American people. We now know that 1 in 31 American children are diagnosed with autism. That is troubling, and HHS has placed finding the root cause at the forefront.

Have you ever heard of GRAS? That means “generally recognized as safe,” and on March 10th, Secretary Kennedy directed the FDA to change the rules on how food companies are allowed to use the designation.

Working with USDA Secretary Rollins, the 2025-2030 dietary guidelines are being updated! They will be easier to read, released before the December deadline, and MAHA-focused! That means that finally, Americans will have sound guidance on how to ensure their health through real medicine—food.

Don’t forget our most valuable asset—our babies! Secretary Kennedy launched Operation Stork Speed, an initiative to make infant formula healthy again. FDA has a responsibility to protect what our babies are eating if they are formula fed, and here are some of the things they will be focused on - things that sound obvious, but have been overlooked in administrations prior:

  • Starting the nutrient review required by law by issuing a Request for Information in the coming months to start the first comprehensive update and review of infant formula nutrients by the FDA since 1998
  • Increasing testing for heavy metals and other contaminants in infant formula and other foods children consume
  • Extending the personal importation policy
  • Encouraging companies to work with the FDA on any questions regarding increased transparency and clearer labeling
  • Communicating regularly with consumers and industry stakeholders as significant developments occur to ensure transparency, including information regarding nutrients and health outcomes
  • Collaborating with the National Institutes of Health and other scientific bodies to address priority scientific research gaps regarding short- and long-term health outcomes associated with formula feeding in infancy and childhood across the lifespan

MAHA thanks Moms Across America founder Zen Honeycutt for her tireless work to test and inform the public about heavy metals in foods. Stay tuned, because there’s much more to come from MAHA on this front.

The list keeps growing! Also in the first 100 days, Secretary Kennedy and HHS completed a MAHA tour. They recognized governors implementing the MAHA agenda in their states by reforming guidelines for what is really nutritious in SNAP, worked with Lee Zeldin to celebrate states removing fluoride from their water supplies, saved the agency more than $67 BILLION (yes, thats “billion,” with a “b”) by partnering with DOGE, minimized animal testing, launched a “Radical Transparency” webpage, and much, much more.

And just yesterday, Secretary Kennedy joined with President Trump, who signed a groundbreaking executive order addressing the safety of our laboratories. The order:

— Ends any present and all future federal funding of dangerous gain-of-function research in countries of concern like China and Iran, as well as in foreign nations deemed to have insufficient research oversight.

— Empowers American research agencies to identify and end Federal funding of other biological research that could threaten American public health, public safety, or national security.

— Prohibits federal funding from contributing to foreign research that is likely to cause another pandemic. These measures will drastically reduce the potential for lab-related incidents involving gain-of-function research, like that conducted on bat coronaviruses in China by the EcoHealth Alliance and Wuhan Institute of Virology.

— Protects Americans from lab accidents and other biosecurity incidents, such as those that likely caused COVID-19 and the 1977 Russian flu.

It has been a fantastic experience thus far, and only promises to get better!!

We Need YOU: Pesticide Immunity Bills Creep Across State Legislatures

MAHA activists have done a fantastic job at the state level, helping to raise awareness and contacting their congresspeople about the good and bad bills. Because of your loud voices, big chemical companies must get crafty. Because they know you are watching, they are changing their tactics. For example, early last week, we learned that the North Carolina legislature had quietly snuck in an immunity clause for pesticide companies like Bayer-Monsanto, granting them immunity from accountability if their products make someone sick. They play an interesting game, using farmers and others to get their agenda across the finish line.

MAHA has been all over these immunity bills, and through the work of the MAHA team and countless others, we have been able to stop nine of the eleven we’ve seen. We’ve also covered this extensively on our social media, website, and in this newsletter. We dedicated an entire section to it in our Spring Magazine (coming soon!). Also, we held a press conference dedicated to exposing what is happening and educating the public on the harms. Our policy team has a number of initiatives launching in the coming weeks, as well.

But let's take a look at what they are attempting to do in North Carolina, so we can make sure we stop this one, too, and know their tactics for the future.

The North Carolina Farm Bill, SB 639, has been amended to include a pesticide immunity provision under "Section 19." This section covers illnesses such as cancer, brain damage, Parkinson’s, infertility, and developmental harm to children. Section 19 of SB 639 changes the rules for over 16,000 pesticides regulated under FIFRA. This is not just about Roundup; this change applies to 16,000 chemicals regulated under the EPA process and covers everything from common household cleaners to highly toxic and restricted chemicals.

The EPA does not do its own safety studies and relies almost exclusively on data gathered and submitted by industry registrants. This legislation rewards companies that defraud regulators using secret data by giving them the protection this bill offers.  Section 19 of SB 639 would harm North Carolina families. This rule would protect companies that violate North Carolina law by acting unreasonably and causing serious injury or death.

Section 19 of SB 639 benefits foreign chemical companies based in Berlin and Beijing. The primary beneficiaries of this legislation are Bayer, based in Berlin, and ChemChina, run by the Chinese Communist Party. This legislation is part of a national campaign by foreign pesticide companies to seek total immunity. This is an effort to rig the system against Americans by taking away our rights to hold companies accountable.

Here is the section in question:

It's unacceptable. Because of your work, help, and support, we could identify that this section was secretly added. We will continue to need your help in raising awareness about these state-by-state actions. In the coming weeks, we will launch a major campaign to educate and inform about what is happening here, including by reaching out to our farmers. Please keep your eyes peeled here and on our new Substack, which will launch soon.

Keep reading, because Missouri is also trying to advance this legislation, and that bill is showcased in our “MAHA Bills to Watch” section below.

MAHA Bills to Watch:

Here are some bills we want you to watch and get engaged with! MAHA needs you to step up in your state and fight right alongside us:

North Carolina -

S639: VERDICT: MAHA OPPOSES

This bill modifies the existing Missouri state law regarding pesticide registration and labeling, primarily updating Section 281.260 of the Revised Statutes of Missouri. The bill requires all pesticides distributed, sold, or transported within the state to be registered annually with the state director, with registrants needing to submit detailed information, including the product name, classification, labeling, and claims. Registrants must pay an annual fee of $200 per product, which will be deposited in the agriculture protection fund, with up to 7% potentially allocated to the pesticide education fund. The bill introduces a new provision specifically addressing cancer warning labels, stating that for pesticides registered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA), a label approved by the EPA or consistent with its carcinogenicity classification shall be sufficient to satisfy any state cancer warning label requirements. Additionally, the bill maintains provisions for late registration fees and experimental use permits. It allows the director discretion in registration decisions, including the ability to deny registration if a pesticide does not meet specific standards or does not comply with federal laws. The bill also allows retailers to dispose of existing pesticide stock after a manufacturer ceases product registration.

The MAHA “Why?” "MAHA strongly opposes this bill. MAHA Action advocates for the importance of protecting individual rights, autonomy, and ensuring the safety of communities. This bill’s approach to pesticide regulation raises concerns about transparency and accountability, particularly in treating cancer warning labels and relying on federal standards without additional state-specific scrutiny. Our values advocate for stronger, more robust measures that protect public health and hold industries accountable for the impact their products may have on the environment and human health. We believe that more stringent and transparent pesticide regulations should be in place to ensure the safety of all Missouri residents."

Alabama

HB491: VERDICT: MAHA SUPPORTS

This bill prohibits public K-12 schools in Alabama from selling, serving, or providing food items containing seven specific food dyes: Red Dye No. 3, Red Dye No. 40, Yellow Dye No. 5, Yellow Dye No. 6, Blue Dye No. 1, Blue Dye No. 2, and Green Dye No. 3. These dyes are identified by their Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) registration numbers, which are unique identifiers for chemical substances. The bill includes an exception for school fundraising events, allowing the sale of food items containing these dyes if the sale occurs either off school premises or on school premises at least 30 minutes after the school day ends. The legislation is set to take effect on August 1, 2025, giving schools time to adjust their food service practices and remove products containing these specific food dyes. The bill appears to be motivated by potential health concerns associated with these artificial food colorings, though the specific reasons for targeting these dyes are not detailed in the text.

The MAHA “Why?” - MAHA Action supports this bill, as it addresses the use of potentially harmful artificial food dyes in Alabama's public K-12 schools. By prohibiting the sale, serving, or provision of food containing certain synthetic dyes, the bill aims to protect children's health and well-being. These dyes have been linked to various health concerns, and this legislation seeks to reduce children's exposure to them in school settings. In promoting healthier food environments, this bill takes a positive step toward protecting students and ensuring access to safer, more nutritious meals.

Missouri

HB544: VERDICT: MAHA OPPOSES

This bill modifies the existing Missouri state law regarding pesticide registration and labeling, primarily updating Section 281.260 of the Revised Statutes of Missouri. The bill requires all pesticides distributed, sold, or transported within the state to be registered annually with the state director, with registrants needing to submit detailed information, including the product name, classification, labeling, and claims. Registrants must pay an annual fee of $200 per product, which will be deposited in the agriculture protection fund, with up to 7% potentially allocated to the pesticide education fund. Additionally, the bill maintains provisions for late registration fees and experimental use permits. It allows the director discretion in registration decisions, including denying registration if a pesticide does not meet specific standards or comply with federal laws. The bill also provides flexibility for retailers to dispose of existing stocks of pesticides after a manufacturer ceases product registration.

The MAHA “Why?” - MAHA Action supports fluoride-free water legislation because it upholds our commitment to medical freedom, informed consent, and public health transparency. We firmly believe that individuals should have the right to make informed choices about the substances they consume, and water fluoridation, as a form of mass medication, denies people the ability to provide personal consent. Given the potential risks to brain development, thyroid function, and bone health, we believe the evidence warrants a more cautious approach. Our support for this legislation reflects our dedication to empowering individuals to make decisions about their health and ensuring transparency in public health practices.

MAHA Lettuce Wrap Sandwiches

4 Tbsp chicken, turkey, or tuna salad

2 lettuce leaves (Bib lettuce works very well for wraps.)

Instructions

Spread 2-3 Tbsp of grass-fed chicken, turkey, or wild-caught tuna salad over the center of each lettuce leaf and roll it. Spread a bit of the mayo on the leaf edges and press the leaves to hold them together.

Nutrition Tip: Want to cut your calories? Two slices of bread have about 160 calories, whereas two lettuce leaves have about two calories. This is a very healthy, low-calorie meal. The lettuce leaves offer two phytonutrients that are great for the eyes—lutein and zeaxanthin, which improve visual acuity.
