On March 18, 2025, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced "Operation Stork Speed," a collaborative initiative with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) aimed at enhancing the safety, nutritional quality, and availability of infant formula in the United States. This initiative includes a comprehensive review of infant formula nutrients, increased testing for contaminants such as heavy metals, and efforts to improve product labeling to better inform consumers. The FDA will also seek public input on these measures and encourage the development of new infant formula products. This announcement follows findings from consumer advocacy groups that raised concerns about contaminant levels in some infant formulas. Kennedy emphasized the importance of ensuring that infant formula products are safe and wholesome for families and children. Acting FDA Commissioner Sara Brenner highlighted the agency's commitment to providing caregivers with confidence in the safety and nutritional adequacy of these products during critical stages of development. The initiative also aims to foster collaboration with scientific bodies to address research gaps regarding health outcomes associated with formula feeding.
