2. Opening Sentence

Begin by stating the purpose of the letter, and make sure to include:

  • The Bill Number
  • Author
  • Topic
3. Leading Paragraphs
  • If you live in the elected official’s district, be sure to mention this in the opening paragraph.
  • Make sure to let the legislator know whether you want them to support or oppose the bill.
  • Focus on the message and key points. Personalize the message and tell your lawmaker how it will impact you, your family, and your state.
4. Additional Considerations
  • Consider letting your representative know if you were a supporter of theirs, for example, if you voted for them or donated to them in the past.
5. Conclusion
  • Before you close, let them know again whether you wish for them to support or oppose the bill.
  • Provide contact information, and let them know you are open to correspondence and discussion.
